Lab note, checked 15 September 2026. On 21 nights (18 Aug–7 Sep 2026) Oura Ring 4 and Whoop 4.0 agreed with a consumer EEG headband on total sleep time within 18 minutes median. REM agreement was worse. Oura’s REM median error was 14 minutes. Whoop’s was 22. Neither is a PSG lab. Whoop’s strap stayed on; Oura missed two nights when the ring charged at 01:00.

Instruments and protocol

Oura Ring 4 on the index finger, size measured with the official sizer. Whoop 4.0 on the non-dominant bicep. Consumer EEG headband as the staging reference — not a clinic PSG. Lights-out diary on paper. Caffeine cutoff 14:00. Alcohol: three nights in the 21, marked and kept, because people drink.

We aligned stages by clock, not by each vendor’s ‘sleep score’. Scores mix readiness marketing. Minutes are the comparable unit.

Where they agreed

Total sleep time is the easy metric. Both wearables tracked bedtime and wake within a few minutes of the diary. Oura’s median absolute error versus EEG total sleep was 12 minutes. Whoop’s was 18. For a consumer ring versus a strap, that is close enough to decide ‘did I sleep six hours or seven’.

Deep-sleep minutes were the next-best overlap. REM was the failure. Oura still beat Whoop on median REM error (14 vs 22 minutes) but both missed short REM fragments the EEG marked after 04:00. If your decision is ‘I need more REM’, neither wearable is a clinic.

Wearability is a data-quality feature

Oura died on two nights because the wearer charged it in bed. Whoop’s battery pack charges on the strap; we lost zero nights to charging. Whoop requires a membership to see the graphs that make the strap worth wearing. Oura sells the ring and a membership too; the hardware is uglier to charge.

Finger PPG hates cold hands. Two nights with room at 64 °F and no socks, Oura’s staging looked like a wake fragment that the EEG did not see. Whoop on the bicep did not show that artifact.

Which to buy, without a storefront

If you will not wear a strap, Oura wins by existing. If you forget to charge a ring, Whoop wins by staying on. If you need REM accuracy for a medical decision, buy neither as a diagnostic. How to read the table

Oura and Whoop both tracked bedtime. Neither asked what you ate. Two of the 21 nights with a late caffeine hit showed “fine” staging and a wrecked next-day rMSSD.
