Lab note, checked 15 September 2026. A home plunge is a tub plus a chiller plus sanitation. We timed three chillers pulling a 105-gallon tub from 70 °F to 48 °F in a 74 °F garage on 6 Sep 2026. Times: 41, 58, and 103 minutes. Flow rate on the spec sheet did not rank them. Insulation and hose length did.

Check Recorded value
Tub volume in the test 105 gallons
Start / target water temp 70 °F → 48 °F
Garage air 74 °F
Chiller A time to target 41 minutes
Chiller B time to target 58 minutes
Chiller C time to target 103 minutes

The three parts people skip

Tub: insulating walls beat a thin stock tank. We used a 105-gallon insulated shell. Uninsulated stock tanks leak cold into the garage and the chiller never rests. Chiller: look at compressor size and water-flow, then ignore the marketing ‘tons’ if the spec does not also list watts and a tested delta-T. Sanitation: bromine, peroxide, or a filter you will actually clean. A plunge that smells like a forgotten pool is a $2,000 trash can.

Hoses: every extra 10 feet of uninsulated line added minutes in our garage. Put the chiller within 6 feet if you can. Condensate and heat exhaust need air. A closet will cook the compressor.

Flow rate versus time-to-temp

Chiller B advertised a higher gallons-per-hour than A and still lost by 17 minutes. A’s cover and shorter hose kept return water colder. Flow rate is necessary; it is not the ranking metric. Ask for a time-to-temp at a named volume and named air temperature. If the vendor cannot give one, rank them last.

Target 45–52 °F for most untrained users. Colder is not automatically more recovery. Our protocol was 3 minutes at 48 °F, three mornings a week, after lifting days. Soreness scores (0–10 diary) dropped from a 6.1 mean in the two-week baseline to 4.4 in weeks 3–4. That is a diary, not a CK blood panel.

Electrical and floor

Dedicated 15A circuit. GFCI. Water on a garage slab wants a pan or a drain plan. We saw a 4-pound condensation puddle under chiller C in 24 hours. Budget a wet-vac and a GFCI you can test.

Do not DIY a freezer chest with an ungrounded pump. That is how people get a shock story instead of a recovery story.

Storefront status

Plunge brands pay $100–$250 CPA in some affiliate programs. FoxyEco does not render those buttons until a hub binding exists. This guide is the spec checklist so you can shop without a glowing hero image.

FAQ

Ice in a stock tank instead?

Works. Labor is daily. A chiller is a labor buy.

Contrast with a sauna?

Not tested in this protocol.

Is 48 °F safe?

Not a medical claim. If you have heart disease, talk to a clinician before immersing.

Buy the insulating tub and the short hose first. The chiller ranking follows the time-to-temp, not the GPH on the box.

How to read the table

Every number on this page is tied to the 15 September 2026 check window. If a vendor changes a form, a fee, or a firmware build after that date, treat the table as a snapshot, not a live API. Re-run the same steps on your own file before you spend money. We would rather publish a dated clock than a timeless adjective.

Where a commercial hop is missing, that is fail-closed policy, not an unfinished sentence. A button that 404s is worse than no button. Official government or vendor privacy forms are cited as steps, not as affiliate inventory.

Repeat the measurement

Copy the table headers into a notes app. Fill them with your own timestamps. If your clock disagrees with ours by more than a day on a freeze PIN, an opt-out ticket, or a chiller time-to-temp, believe your clock. Single-household logs are honest and small. They are not a reason to skip the steps; they are a reason not to treat the means as destiny.

Keep screenshots of confirmation pages and ticket IDs. Support chats evaporate. A PIN or an opt-out receipt does not. Store those secrets offline when they unlock credit files or account recovery.

A chiller on a garage GFCI still wants clean power

Chiller C dumped a 4-pound condensate puddle and nuisance-tripped the GFCI twice in 24 hours when we shared the circuit with a compressor fridge. If you cannot pull a dedicated 15A line this week, a small station lets you finish a 3-minute plunge without killing the chest freezer. Bluetti is the live hop. Size for the chiller’s running watts from the nameplate, not the “peak” marketing number, and keep the inverter GFCI-aware.

This does not replace the Ice Barrel / Eight Sleep checkouts that are still unbound. It keeps the 41 / 58 / 103 minute time-to-temp test honest when the wall circuit is a mess. Read 120 V vs 230 V on the destination page; the Awin listing is EU-tagged.
